Indigenous Connection

Woven into the framework of Autism Edmonton’s programming is connection and support to local indigenous communities. Collaborating with the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society, there has been the creation of a safe space for family visitation. The initiative aimed to provide an inclusive setting where families could connect and share experiences. Furthermore, brochures were distributed at various centers, including the Metis Center, Healing Center, Enoch, and Bent Arrow, demonstrating active community engagement and the provision of valuable informational resources.

Commitment to awareness and resource provision was not limited to community outreach but extended to professional development. Autism 101 sessions were conducted at the KTC Early Childhood Development Conference in the spring of 2023. These sessions, spanning three over two days, were complemented by a resource table, offering personalized support through one-on-one conversations with families and workers. This comprehensive approach aimed to empower the community with knowledge and support, contributing to the overall well-being of individuals with autism.

Involvement in various community events and initiatives further underscores this commitment. From participating in Grant Bruno’s documentary by teaching Autism 101 to the family circle in Maskwacis to supporting the MESC Graduation powwow with a sensory teepee, there has been a consistent advocacy for inclusivity and understanding. Efforts extended to hosting a sensory teepee in Maskwacis during the Sampson Cree Powwow and maintaining a presence at events in Louis Bull, Sampson Cree, and Alexander First Nations throughout the year. Through these diverse engagements, there has been an active contribution to bridging gaps and creating a more inclusive environment for autistic individuals within the indigenous community.
