Connecting the Dots: Negotiating Care for Young Persons with Autism in Alberta

We want to learn about families' experiences with supports and services in  Alberta!

  • What have your experiences with the health, education and social service systems been like?
  • What have you experiences with informal supports, for example, your family, friends and community, been like?
  • How do you manage supports and services over time?
  • What supports, services or resources are most and least helpful?
  • How can your family experiences be improved?

We will talk with parents and young persons with autism (from diagnosis to age 30) for about 1 hour, at a time and place convenient for you. You do not have to be receiving formalized supports to participate.

We hope you will consider participating in this important study. It is crucial to have input from families to improve care and service delivery.

Parents Wanted for a Study on Bullying and ASD

Are you the parent of a child or youth who has been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome or Autism?  Researchers from York University, Dr. Jonathan Weiss and Catherine Cappadocia, are conducting a nation wide study to investigate bullying experiences among children and youth diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  There is currently little research on this topic despite anecdotal evidence that suggests it is a very important issue for children and youth with ASD.  This study will identify factors that increase or decrease the likelihood of bullying and investigate the impact of bullying on the mental health of children with ASD.

Please take 30 minutes to complete an important survey about bullying!
As a first step towards a better understanding of bullying and victimization among children and youth with ASD, parents can complete this survey online.  Parents will be asked to talk about their child’s experiences with bullying, school situation, and diagnosis and symptoms of Asperger syndrome or Autism.  Parents will also be asked their own perspective on their child’s health and behaviour and how this makes them feel.

Survey results will be used to support school and community programs for children and youth with ASD.  The knowledge gained through this study will contribute to the development of future bullying prevention and intervention programs across Canada.  This project was approved by the York University Research Ethics Board.

Thank you in advance for your consideration!  As a token of our appreciation, all survey participants will be entered into a draw for $300.

Participate in the World's Largest Research Study on Autism Spectrum Disorders

More than 60 researchers from the Autism Spectrum Disorder - Canadian-American Research Consortium (ASD-CARC), headed by Dr. Jeannette Holden from Queen's University in Kingston,Ontario, are hoping to study tens of thousands of families in order to identify the genes and environmental factors that contribute to causing ASDs. Consider participating in this study if your family has someone with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Researchers are also looking for control families - those families who do not have a family member with an ASD.
